The first part of this course explores the conditions that lead to the initiation, escalation, spread, termination, and consequences of international conflict, as well as the circumstances that promote, preserve, or restore peace. We will progress through a number of different approaches using a levels of analysis perspective: This progression starts by looking at the structure of the international system, then moves to individual nations, then a focus on the internal structure of states (political systems for instance) and finishing with an analysis of individual leaders. The second half of the course focuses on the World Order aspect of title and examines such topics as international cooperation, international organizations and foreign aid. The course emphasizes the application of models of strategic rational action as tools for assessing relations between nations, coupled with statistical and historical analysis of events.

DS-428 CONFLICT RESOLUTION AND TRANSFORMATION

This course examines the dynamics of conflict resolution and conflict transformation as an interdisciplinary subject. But, the primary focus remains on the contemporary debates of the conflict, conflict resolution, conflict transformation evolved from the International relations and security studies debates. The course elaborate various theoretical models of conflict resolution and its practices in the contemporary international and domestic conflicts. In addition, students are also expose to various scholarly concepts linked with conflict resolution, for example, peace studies, conflict management, conflict prevention, and conflict transformation. The present course is paying special attention to the role of narratives and conflict resolution. While examining the role of culture, religion, and ethno identity to understand the conflict processes and transformation. Theoretical debates are attributed with various empirical case studies during the course. The objective of this course is to familiarize the student with the recent theoretical debates on conflict resolution and conflict transformation. At the practical side, students able to describe and apply a range of conflict resolution methods including mediation, negotiation, and advocacy.  Students develop conflict resolution skills. Adopting a problem based learning approach, the course emphasizes the importance of student’s communication skills as an essential attribute in effective conflict resolution.

The contemporary International Relations and War Studies deals with the European & American discourse. However, over the period of time the Islamic concept and ways of practicing diplomacy and war tactics; has always been negated by the academicians and scholars. This course aims to explain the concept of war and strategy from the Islamic perspective. The course will discuss the concepts of war and its tactics, deterrence, peace, strategic planning, offensive and defensive strategies as explained and practiced by the Holy Prophet of Islam (PBUH). It will also explain the strategies proposed by Islam in pre-war and post-war settings. The interplay of mediation and negotiation process and the theories of war & peace in light of Islamic teachings. The course will help the students to learn and understand the pre-war and post-war doctrinal thinking and strategies from Islamic perspective. It will also help to provide an alternative view about war and peace in Islam.
