Most of DSS alumni have joined civil bureaucracy, public as well as private sector research organizations, print and broadcast media as well as non-governmental organizations working in the field of security studies. Some go abroad for advance training. A very large number of DSS graduates are working in leading think tanks of the country such as the ISSI, IRS, IPRI, IPS, ISSRA et al. they also find job placements in higher education institutions and many are serving in the Ministry of Defence.
