Lecture by Mr. Danish Mustafa on hydro Politics of Pakistan

Mr. Danish Mustafa, Faculty Department of Geography, King’s College, University of London, visited the department and gave a lecture on Climate Changes and Scales of Pakistani Hydro Politics, on April 8th, 2010, at the DSS. The speaker discussed at length the issues pertaining to hydro politics in Pakistan, and examined the four approaches towards climate change and also the controversy surrounding the Indus Water treaty. How poor management, scarcity and ill planned agricultural practices can create drastic climatic changes, and feed into the already complex hydro-politics of the country. These complexities will lead to resource (water) warfare, which could be at sub regional level to inter-state conflict, and may result from simple resource sharing disputes to secessionist conflicts and in case of interstate warfare to a nuclear exchange in a worst case scenario. The two hour long presentation was followed by a student led Q& A session.
